Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Launch Budget = $200 Million

Posted November 18, 2009 by David Radd

It’s well known at this point that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has generated revenue to the tune of $550 million in its first five days at retail, punctuating the game’s expensive development and promotion. Exactly how much the detailed graphics and extensive ad campaign cost the company was revealed today to be comparable to a major movie launch.

"My goal was to create a launch that would compare very favorably to the biggest box offices of all time," said Activision Blizzard Chief Executive Bobby Kotick.

The LA Times indicates that Modern Warfare 2 cost between $40 million to $50 million to develop. When factoring in the production and distribution of materials on top of marketing expenses, the launch budget was somewhere around $200 million for the game. This number is shockingly high for a video game, but shows the confidence Activision had in the game being a global hit.
