Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Sells 1.2 Million in 24 Hours in U.K.

The general consensus is that Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will top all games this holiday season and possibly become the #1 selling title for 2009.  GameStop told us it was the most pre-ordered game in their history, and analysts have predicted that game would rack up over $500 million in sales during its first week.

It comes as little surprise that Modern Warfare 2 is off to a red hot start across the pond. ChartTrack has revealed that the game sold 1.23 million copies in its first day. The game generated around £47 million ($78 million) during that time. ChartTrack pointed out that this almost doubles the previous record held by Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold about 613,000 units and grossed £27.2 million during its first 24 hours.

“These first day sales figures are astonishing and clear evidence that videogames are now mainstream in the UK. Our form of interactive entertainment has completely come of age. Just like some movies and books, this is specifically intended for an adult audience and accordingly has emotional, adult content. So, as an 18-rated videogame, it is important that this game is not played by children, and parents should be appropriately vigilant," commented Michael Rawlinson, Director General, Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA).
