Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Could Be Top Selling Game of All Time, says GameStop

Posted August 20, 2009 by James Brightman

On the conference call following the release of GameStop's second-quarter fiscal results, Tony Bartel, EVP of Merchandising and Marketing, talked about games that would help drive the back half of the year for the industry and GameStop. He pointed to Halo: ODST, Assassin's Creed 2, and most important of all, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

In fact, GameStop believes Modern Warfare 2 could set new records. “We expect Modern Warfare 2 could be the best selling title of all time,” Bartel said. He added later in the call that GameStop has been seeing “very strong reservations” for the Prestige edition of Modern Warfare 2, which ships with the night vision goggles. Once that edition was announced, he said that GameStop saw many customers upgrade from the base version to the premium version, “which is a very good sign.”

Overall, he noted that “anticipated price reductions for consoles will drive demand and expand the installed base for our core audience.”

It will be interesting to see how the rest of their marketing campaign is. I would think it's going to be a huge blitz.

Top selling game of all time? Not unless they can best the original Super Mario Bros(Nes) at over 40 million copies sold. And honestly, thats just not going to happen.

Wii Sports is the best selling game of all time at 47.62 million (and still going up), no chance in hell of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beating that. Even if you take out games that were bundled, the best selling game would be Wii Fit at 21.82 million (as of June 30) and I don't think COD: MW2 will come even close to that.

Utter Tosh, yes Modern Warfare 2 will sell very well indeed but it's a age rated title which will only appeal to a certain section of the gaming demographic. Seems to me like hyperbole to help drive sales of a title which has received some bad press of late due to it's inflated price tag.
