Borderlands Is Best Selling New IP in 2009, says Gearbox

The folks at Gearbox Software today declared their new game Borderlands the "fastest-selling original property video game launch of 2009." The Xbox 360 version sold through 418,000 units, placing it third on the all-SKU NPD top 10 chart for October. "In spite of launching towards the end of the month and competing against the first full month of sales of the latest Halo sequel [ODST], Borderlands dominated the Xbox 360 for October taking the #1 best seller position for the platform," the company stated.

Gearbox also pointed out that if you combine the total October sales of the game (545,000 units) across its Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC SKUs, the sales data would place Borderlands above Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Wii Fit Plus, which took first and second place, respectively during October.

"We are extremely excited about the reception that Borderlands has earned and I am personally very proud of the incredible team here at Gearbox for having created video games' first great shooter-looter," said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software, who has been in the headlines a lot these days. "I want to thank all of the fans of the game who have bought in with us and I want to thank publishing partner 2k Games for taking a big bet on such an ambitious game and standing by the team here at Gearbox Software as Borderlands grew into a very special game - so bold and rare and fun in its style and design."

Gearbox is continuing to support Borderlands with DLC, including some game-improving free updates. The first Borderlands DLC, titled "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned"  will be available "soon" for Windows PC and will launch on Xbox Live and PSN on November 24. And Gearbox promised that there is "more to come."

Borderlands has been a big boon for Take-Two, and some believe it's the franchise the publisher has needed to go beyond GTA.
