Bon Jovi Backs Courtney Love in Cobain Guitar Hero Protest

Posted September 17, 2009 by James Brightman

Over the past week or so, a lot of attention's been paid to Kurt Cobain's likeness in Guitar Hero 5, primarily because Activision enables gamers to use the Cobain avatar to play/sing other songs besides those from Nirvana. Cobain's widow Courtney Love said that Activision's use of Cobain's image in that manner is a breach of contract. Former Nirvana members bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl also expressed their displeasure with the Cobain avatar.

Now it would appear that rocker Jon Bon Jovi has come out in support of Cobain as well. Speaking to the BBC, Bon Jovi said, "I don't know that I would have wanted it either. To hear someone else's voice coming out of a cartoon version of me? I don't know. It sounds a little forced."

Bon Jovi, who's had his music featured in both Rock Band and Guitar Hero ("You Give Love a Bad Name" is one of the tracks in Guitar Hero 5), was approached by Activision to have his likeness featured in Guitar Hero 5 too, but he decided he didn't like the idea. "I had the paperwork, they wanted me to be on that game and I just passed," he said. "But no-one even broached the subject with me that I would be singing other people's stuff. I don't know how I would have reacted to that."
