While Blizzard has been offering paid services like character re-customization and server transfer for a while now, today they unveiled the first true virtual item sale opportunity in World of Warcraft. The "Pet Store" was unveiled today, with two pets available for $10 apiece.
The two pets are Lil' K.T. (a miniature, cat-like reproduction of the lich Kel'Thuzad) and a Pandaren Monk. 50 percent of the Pandaren Monk purchase will go towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation until December 31. Neither pet conveys any sort of benefit in combat.
According to the FAQ for the Pet Store, Blizzard plans to add additional pets for purchase "in the near future." The pets purchased in the Pet Store cannot be acquired in any other fashion in-game.
We'd have to imagine that the new pet output in the Pet Store will depend entirely on player demand. $10 honestly strikes us as a bit pricey, but then again, we've never paid for a cosmetic virtual item.
