Blizzard: DOTA Name 'Should Belong To The Community'

Posted October 24, 2011 by M.H. Williams

It has been many, many years since the Warcraft III “Defense of the Ancients” mod became known only as “DOTA”.  Now outside of the DOTA-inspired League of Legends, two companies have decided to stake their claim on the name: Blizzard and Valve.  While Valve is creating Dota 2, Blizzard is developing Blizzard DOTA

Currently, Valve is attempting to trademark the name “Dota” for its title, but Blizzard’s Mike Morhaime believes that the name should belong to the fans.

"I can share that our opinion about the situation is that the DOTA name really should belong to the community. I think that it's been part of the Warcraft 3 community for a very long time, and we would like to see the community continue being able to use that name, and having an exclusive mark owned by a competitor doesn't feel right to us,” Morhaime told Eurogamer.

Morhaime insists that Blizzard is still friendly with Valve over the matter.

"We're very friendly with Valve. So yeah, we do talk to Valve,” he said.
