BioWare Actually Not Helping Develop Darkspore

Posted July 27, 2010 by James Brightman

Earlier this week we reported (based on a Gamespot story) that BioWare was helping out Maxis with certain aspects of the upcoming Diablo-esque action-RPG Darkspore. As it turns out, the original report was not correct.

"The Darkspore team is working with Malcolm Azania for the writing/fiction in the game. Malcolm comes from the BioWare team and worked on the Mass Effect fiction. That’s the extent of it," an EA spokesperson explained to us.

So Azania is now serving as the lead story writer for Darkspore. As alluded to by the spokesperson, he was a contributing writer for BioWare’s Mass Effect 2, co-wrote the ME2 downloadable mission for Kasumi, and wrote Gift of the Yeti.

Additionally, although we labeled the Darkspore title as a "spinoff" of the Spore franchise, EA does not consider it to be a spinoff. "It is a brand new IP from Maxis," the spokesperson stressed.
