BioShock on Wii 'Not Out of the Sphere of Possibility'

Posted February 5, 2010 by James Brightman

In recent months, a number of video game publishers have publicly talked about pulling back Wii support, particularly when it comes to core or mature content. In fact, today a survey from Game Developer found that Wii development dropped from 42 percent last year to just 30 percent this year. Naturally, BioShock doesn't seem like the kind of property that would fit the Wii audience, given these trends, but in our recent in-depth interview with 2K Marin's Jordan Thomas we decided to ask him about making BioShock for Wii anyway.

"Nothing beyond speculation presently," he answered, then adding: "Anything that's brought to the Wii tends to need to be purpose built, or fairly fundamentally re-architected. There are few games that use Unreal that made it across to the Wii. It doesn't mean that it's out of the sphere of possibility, but it's not something we considered for BioShock 2."

Considering that 2K took BioShock online with multiplayer we asked Thomas what might be next. We brought up the idea of an MMO, but he seemed to hint at co-op gameplay.

"Personally, I value the intimacy of the BioShock experience. I have not seen an MMO successfully convey that, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. I would be more interested – speaking purely hypothetically – in a BioShock- like game that explored more personal cooperative play, rather than a big amusement park style design," he said.

I sort of think that if 2K Games was going to do a BioShock title for Wii, they would have announced it at this point. As for the co-op multiplayer aspects, that could work out pretty well; given the patriarchal relationship between the Big Daddy and the Little Sisters in BioShock 2, I could see something similar working out, assuming the second player was a more active character than Little Sisters usually are.

Could be interesting if done right....no cheap ports please.

A co-worker of mine bought a 360 just for Bioshock because he heard so much about the story being great. He quit playing in disgust after a mission where (paraphrasing him) he had to murder innocent people to progress. I probably would have done the same, so my interest level in a Wii version is pretty low.
