Best Buy to Launch Game Magazine

Posted May 12, 2010 by Ben Strauss

Calling their new magazine “@Gamer,” Best Buy plans on getting into the magazine business, just as Electronic Gaming Monthly has reentered the fray. Kyle Orland (with The Game Beat) uncovered the existence of the magazine when he noticed that veteran games journalist Andy Eddy posted his new job. Mr. Eddy writes on his Employers section of Facebook, “I'm working at Future US in the Future Plus group on a new publication called @Gamer, the 'official games magazine of Best Buy.'"

With a new publication out, and a re-entry into the used games market being tested, Best Buy is positioning itself to gain a stronger presence in the overall games market. With the new magazine out, it is a direct response to one of its major competitors, GameStop. Whether or not the new @Gamer will put any dent into Game Informer’s reader base remains to be seen, but come this summer GameStop is going to have a fight on its hands.

Though no official word from Best Buy has been released, it has been stated that the magazine has a target release date sometime late June.

It's worth noting that this is not the first magazine from Best Buy. Back in 2004, GamePro publisher IDG was contracted to produce Gamestar, which ultimately only lasted a few issues.

Purchasing MS points straight from Xbox Live is super convenient. I hope they find a way to make this work without having to log onto Xbox.com
