Best Buy Replacing CD and DVD Space With More Games

Posted September 22, 2010 by M.H. Williams

It seems the twilight of the CD is finally at hand. Daily Finance is reporting that Best Buy has looked at how it uses space in individual stores, and has decided to cut shelf space for CDs and DVDs. The company is looking to replace those formats with more video games and pop electronics like netbooks, the Kindle, and Apple’s iPad.

"We'll have another store reset before the holidays, which will include an increase in the space for higher-growth and, in the aggregate, higher-margin categories, like Best Buy Mobile, e-readers and gaming, with a heavy emphasis on new gaming platforms and pre-owned game titles," Best Buy Chief Executive Brian Dunn said to analysts in a conference call. "This will be enabled by our reorganization of the DVD and CD sections. The CD section in particular will shrink in space allotment."

Best Buy is chasing the consumer dollar wherever it may go, with possible focuses including motion gaming, 3D TV, and the upcoming deluge of tablets. These are all markets where the gaming industry is currently poised to shine.
