Report: Best Buy Getting PS3 Bundle

Posted July 6, 2009 by David Radd

Recent reports have suggested that Sony may be looking to lighten the load of 80GB PS3s on store shelves, and Kotaku reports that they may be looking to do so with software bundles. Citing several Best Buy employees, the site is reporting that the big box retailer will be getting 80GB PS3s that include Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2.

The report says that the new PS3 bundle will be hitting store shelves on Sunday, July 12. The bundle will retail for $399, equal to the current asking price of a standard 80GB PS3.

We have to give Sony and/or Best Buy credit for anteing up on this bundle.  Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2  are two of the best exclusive titles on the system, and even if Sony lowers the price with a PS3 Slim later this year, customers still should be very happy with their purchase. At the moment for Sony, it's still all about adding value to the PS3 console, rather than cutting price (although a price drop is all but inevitable this year we think).

My goodness! Sony will do anything in its power not to drop the price! Of course, this is understandable, considering the fact that currently they loose about $40 on each console they sell, so it makes sense for them to try to maintain that price. However, I couldn't help but notice that this report actually "confirms" previous reports/rumors that state that during the summer Sony will launch very attractive bundles in order to sell the old PS3's and replace them with the upcoming PS3 slim (or whatever the name of the slimmer PS3 will be). Now, for all potential PS3 buyers out there (I am one of them), you can get these two games on Amazon for about $63 (including shipping costs). You can get Killzone 2 for about $37 and MGS4 for about $26 (37 + 26 = 63). If a $63 price cut is ok for you (assuming that you were going to buy these two games anyway), you should go for it. I am waiting for the $100 price cut! (I know what you are going to say, "good luck with that" :)). What can I say, I love my money more than I love the PS3.
