Battlefield 3 Graphics Only 'Standard-Def' on Xbox 360 Without Hard Drive

Posted October 20, 2011 by Ben Strauss

Our earlier interview with EA DICE's Patrick Bach discussed the possible limitations present on the Xbox 360, and it seems as though the smaller disc size has caused something of a problem for some consumers. New information now indicates that players who wish to see the game in all of its glory will indeed have to install the second disc to the hard drive. That means a hard drive will have to be owned in the first place, something that not all gamers have.

"There's nothing magic about it," said Bach to GamerZines. "It's the same thing we do for PC and PS3, so there's nothing extra. The thing with the 360 is that you need to be able to give consumers a game where you don't have to install it on a hard drive, because there are 360s without a hard drive. You could call it a 'standard-def' version for the 360 if you don't have a hard drive."

As of this time, Bach was unsure of just how big the second disc is going to be. The point of the add-on is to give the best quality graphics that can be provided - akin to the presentation thus seen on the PC and PS3.

Luckily, the installation is optional for those gamers without the rather expensive HDD offered by Microsoft. Gamers will still be able to play BF3 on standard and high-definition screens, just with “inferior graphics.”
