Fable Creator Molyneux Apologizes For Over-Promising

Posted March 17, 2011 by M.H. Williams

While accepting a BAFTA Fellowship last night at a ceremony, Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux apologized for his tendency to over-promise on game features during interviews.  The designer said he does that in order to keep journalists awake while he talks about his games.

"I'd like to thank the press, by the way, for listening to my stuff. Sorry - I've slightly over-promised on things on occasion," he said. "I could name at least 10 features in games that I've made up to stop journalists going to sleep and I really apologise to the team for that."

"Every day I wake up and thank the stars that I'm still here now. I love my job so much and I really feel like going home and working harder than I've ever done to prove that I deserve this award,” he closed.

Molyneux was honored for his long-standing contributions to the industry, having worked on titles like Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Black & White, and Fable.  He becomes the fourth industry luminary to accept the fellowship, with previous winners including Shigeru Miyamoto, Nolan Bushnell, and Will Wright.

In the original version of this article, Molyneux said he exaggerated forty times and the piece was originally scheduled to release in April of last year. For publishing, the scale had to be reduced and the schedule extended. ;-)

This man is guilty of extreme jibber-jabber! I sentence him to a lecture from Mr. T about wasting people's time with said jibber-jabber.

The promises over the Fable series (particularly the first Fable) really inflated a game series I never thought was that great. Of course, people still seem to be buying the games, so it's not too huge I deal I suppose.

Well, the Fable games are great, they're just well short of what he initially promises of them. It's like they're 8/10 games, but only because they're only 75% of the 12/10 game he promises.

Oh He forgot to apologize for something else he over promised on.
1 Being able to finish the game dispite a bug.
2 Being able to FIX the bug two years after the game is released (Fable2).
3 Selling add ons that you cant get to unless you have finished a game that will not let you.
4 Justifying not fixing it by saying only 2 percent finishes games anyway.
5 bringing down the xbox360 image.
6 Being a business lizard.
7 Not refunding my $59.99 plus tax.
8 Excepting any awards that imply quality.
