Australia's R18+ Rating Is Coming

Posted August 10, 2011 by M.H. Williams

Rejoice Australian gamers who’ve been missing out on that sweet, sweet simulated violence, blood, and gore!  New South Wales has joined the other Australian jurisdictions in agreeing to create a brand-new R18+ classification for mature video games.  The Law Ministers of the other jurisdictions added their support to the idea last month and the NSW Attorney-General announced today that Cabinet had given “in-principle” support for the rating.

"I am delighted that NSW has decided to support what is not just a practical public policy, but a very popular policy,” Minister for Justice Brendan O’Connor said. “The introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games will provide better advice to parents and help prevent children and teenagers from accessing unsuitable material.”

“Once introduced, the new classification will also afford adults the opportunity to view material designed for adults.  It is a credit to all jurisdictions that the meeting has now been able to achieve agreement over what is a complex matter in classification policy.”

Legislation to introduce the new classification is currently being prepared.
