Atlus U.S. Makes A Profit Thanks To Demon's Souls

Posted October 22, 2010 by M.H. Williams

Atlus’ parent company, Index Holdings, has released the publisher’s financial earnings report for the 12 months ending on August 31, 2010. Atlus USA recorded revenue of ¥3.29 billion ($40.5 million) up from ¥2.73 billion ($33.5 million) during the same period in 2009. The publisher reports profits of ¥437 million ($5.4 million), an excellent gain over 2009’s reported loss of ¥104 million ($1.3 million).

The company attributes the strong performance in sales almost solely to sales of Demon’s Souls. The From Software-developed RPG was released by Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan, but Sony declined to release a North American version. Atlus scooped up the property, which spread quickly through the Western gaming community due to positive word-of-mouth. The success of the title surprised even Atlus itself.

Heading into 2011, Atlus is banking on the next title in the Shin Megami Tensei series, Catherine. The off-beat title is the company’s first HD, multiplatform release, with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions in development. There’s no word on whether Project Dark, From Software’s spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, will also see a release from Atlus.
