Atari and Cryptic Studios Announce Neverwinter for the PC

Posted August 23, 2010 by Ben Strauss

Atari and Cryptic Studios are working on a new online role-playing game based on the popular Dungeons & Dragons franchise and the well-known fictional city of Neverwinter. The new game is part of a multi-platform launch, with a book trilogy in the works from acclaimed fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore.

"We're beyond thrilled to develop a brand new version of Neverwinter. It's been years since the original became a gaming icon and we're honored to work with such a great franchise," said Jack Emmert, COO of Cryptic Studios. "We've been working closely with Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore to create an authentic D&D adventure filled with compelling fiction and exciting gameplay."

The game will follow the familiar rules of the D&D universe; players will be able to form 5 player co-op groups as they play the game. Gamers will also be able to develop their own storylines and quests utilizing a new content generation system, tentatively codenamed Forge.

"Wizards of the Coast is excited to invite millions of fans back to Neverwinter with the launch of R.A. Salvatore's Gauntlgrym," said Liz Schuh, brand director for Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast. "And we're excited about the prospects for great digital gaming experiences based on this epic world."

The game is set for release in Q4 2011 and will be released alongside a book trilogy and a tabletop role-playing game from Wizards of the Coast. Book one to the adventure will be released on October 5; it will lay the groundwork for the Neverwinter storyline.
