Apple Hires Longtime IGN Nintendo Editor

Posted April 23, 2010 by James Brightman

If it wasn't already clear that Apple is taking its iPhone games business very seriously, the company has just taken another step to fine tune the experience for the millions of gamers consuming apps in the App Store. After 13 years writing for IGN (mostly about Nintendo), Matt Casamassina has announced on his blog that he's leaving the consumer games website in favor of a unique position with Apple, which will see him essentially serve as the lens filtering all the cool game apps we see on the App Store.

"Anybody who has read my work through the years will know that I’ve long been a huge Nintendo fan, but if there is one company that could entice me away from covering Mario and Zelda it’s the one owned by Steve Jobs. Beginning early May, I will join Apple as global editorial games manager, App Store," he wrote. "In a nutshell, I will be leading the charge for games on the App Store, so whether you browse through iTunes, iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, the games content you see will be handpicked and organized by me and my team. I couldn’t be happier."

The App Store is a very crowded place for games (and all apps), so having someone with a keen knowledge of games (and what makes a good game) actually filter some of the available games and make recommendations seems like a good move for Apple.
