App Store Reaches Two Billion Downloads

Posted September 28, 2009 by David Radd

Apple today revealed that there have been two billion app downloads from the App Store. Although Apple did not say how many games in particular were downloaded, games are the largest category in the App Store.

“The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

There are currently over 50 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide. Over 125,000 members of Apple’s iPhone Developer Program have created over 85,000 apps. Furthermore, according to Mobclix, there are over 16,500 games out of those 85,000 apps, which means games represent nearly 20% of all apps. Entertainment and books are the next two biggest categories.
