Angry Birds Hits 200 Million Downloads as Rovio Aims for IPO in 2-3 Years

It was only two months ago that Angry Birds reached 100 million downloads, and more recently the mobile blockbuster from Rovio reached 140 million, as Rovio talked about its plans to expand to China. Now the game has already made it to 200 million downloads.

Rovio said the 200 million milestone is across all platforms and includes all three games released so far: Angry Birds, Angry Birds: Seasons and Angry Birds: Rio. In addition, Rovio is benefitting from Angry Birds merchandise, with three million items sold to date.

"We have seen more growth and engagement with Angry Birds games and merchandise across all markets," said Rovio CEO Mikael Hed. "The growing numbers of fans give us more incentive to keep creating more fresh, fun and engaging Angry Birds experiences and making them available to everyone."

With such incredible success, many are wondering if Rovio could go public. That may happen, as Hed told Reuters that 2-3 years would be "realistic" for an IPO. "I see that this is only beneficial for us in terms of making the company more structured and more focused on creating it into a proper large organization, having grown from a company of 12," he said.

Rovio expects to make revenue of 50 to 100 million euros ($72-$143 million) this year; Hed noted that the company is "very, very profitable."
