Activision: DJ Hero is Highest Grossing New IP in 2009

Posted January 19, 2010 by James Brightman

Activision happily announced today that DJ Hero was the #1 new intellectual property based on revenue in the U.S. and Europe for calendar 2009. Considering the game launched for $120 and also offered an even more expensive "Renegade" edition, it's no surprise that its dollar sales total would rank higher.

"DJ Hero has transformed music gaming by marrying an innovative turntable controller and exhilarating gameplay with the biggest artists and incredible music from around the world," said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard. "Consumers and critics agree that DJ Hero is one of the best music games ever created and further establishes Guitar Hero as the premier franchise of its kind."

We don't think DJ Hero reinforces anything about Guitar Hero. The game is different enough and does what it does well enough in its own right. Affixing "Hero" to the brand is understandable from a marketing perspective, however.

Kotick recently confirmed to GameInformer that Activision is indeed working on a DJ Hero sequel.  "If you're going to make a commitment to doing something original, the odds are that you're not going to get it right on the first chance," he said. "I think DJ Hero is a really innovative product. I can't wait for you to see next year's. That's the thing; we're sticking with it. We'll stick with it and get it right.”
