3D TV Sees Interest from Just 2% of U.K.

Posted August 27, 2010 by M.H. Williams

According to a YouGov survey for Deloitte, only 89 of 4199 respondents intend to buy a 3D TV within the next year. GI.biz reports that this figure only includes those intending to buy a 3D set, as opposed to those who might buy a 3D-capable set in search of a new TV. The number indicates that only 2% of U.K. consumers are looking to buy the new wave of the future. 25 to 34 year olds remained the most likely to buy a 3D TV, with those over 45 being the least interested.

Interest for new televisions of any type was low, with only 7% looking to buy an HDTV in the next year.

"It is remarkable how conservative people’s predictions for their own technology spending habits over the coming year were. Belts have tightened after the economic downturn and with little understanding of what lies ahead, consumers are still being cautious,” Deloitte’s media director Paul Lee told the Telegraph.

This mirrors a similar survey conducted in Japan last month, with 70% percent of respondents having no interest in purchasing a 3D TV.  It doesn't bode well for the future of 3D gaming, at least in the short term. Perhaps in the long run as prices come down and adoption goes up, 3D gaming could take off

No one can afford it, there is not much material out there, there is some interest but it isn't strong, etc. They sets are going to have to cost pretty much the same as existing sets for people to start getting really interested.

I second that. Most people can't afford it. When the USA went into a recession it took the whole planet with it, being the world currency, and the largest economy, and consumer. These statitics prove a point though. You can make any number look bad. The thing is a analysis of a percent of a percent. If 7% plan to buy and 2% of those plan to buy 3DTV's that means that 28.5% of tv buyers plan to buy a 3dtv (2 divided by 7=28.57). So a third of the millions sold aint chicken feed folks. This is like listening to a politician claim the record turn around in the recession is a bad job by the President. WRONG, why do you think he got the noble prize?

When more people are able to afford those numbers will go UP. Especially as content both video games and movies go up people will have not only interest in 3dtv's by tv's in total will get pushed up. Remember when Microsoft was betting on online back before xbox(1)? Yeah it took awhile but now nearly EVERYONE has to have it in there games! Even fighting games are online. If we finish building it, it will come! You can be sure that Microsoft and Sony are watching 3DS.
